Our Story

We Started Taproot Because We Believe in You.

For over 30 years, we've walked alongside people in recovery — and we founded Taproot to create the kind of home where lasting change happens.

How It All Began

Our Story

Taproot was born from a simple but powerful realization: recovery doesn't just need a place to stay; it needs a place to belong. Brenda Cross founded Taproot after three decades of walking alongside individuals and families in the Sacramento area, witnessing firsthand the gap between clinical treatment and real-world stability.

Her journey in recovery started over 30 years ago, and throughout her career as a Certified Addiction Treatment Counselor, she saw that lasting change happens in the quiet moments of a shared meal, the accountability of a morning check-in, and the safety of a home that actually feels like home. Taproot Recovery Residences was established to provide exactly that—a sanctuary where the roots of recovery can grow deep and strong.

Today, Taproot stands as a testament to the belief that everyone is capable of transformation when they are grounded in care, dignity, and a community that refuses to give up on them.

A Personal Promise

Our Promise to Every Resident

Dear Future Resident,

I want you to know that your decision to seek a safe place to recover is the most courageous step you will ever take. When we founded Taproot, we didn't want to just create another 'facility.' We wanted to build a home — a place where the air feels lighter and the weight of the past doesn't have to define your morning.

My promise to you is simple: We will see you as a whole person, not a diagnosis. We will provide the safety you need to be vulnerable, the structure you need to grow, and the community you need to thrive. You don't have to walk this path alone anymore. Welcome home.
