When to Consider Sober Living
Signs Your Loved One May Need Sober Living
Have you noticed any of the following?
They've completed treatment but don't have a safe, sober place to live.
They keep returning to the same environment — and the same patterns.
They're isolating and losing connection with supportive people.
They're struggling to maintain employment or daily responsibilities.
You've noticed mood changes, secrecy, or old behaviors returning.
They've expressed a desire to change but don't know where to start.
You feel like you're running out of options.
If any of these resonate, a conversation with us might help.
Do:
- ✅ Wait until they are sober and you are calm.
- ✅ Express your love and concern clearly.
- ✅ Use "I" statements to share your feelings.
- ✅ Listen without interrupting or lecturing.
- ✅ Set firm boundaries for your own wellbeing.
- ✅ Offer specific paths for help, like Taproot.
How to Have the Conversation
Guidance for Families
Don't:
- ❌ Argument or yell while they are under the influence.
- ❌ Accept excuses or blame for their substance use.
- ❌ Make threats that you aren't prepared to keep.
- ❌ Preach, moralize, or try to guilt-trip them.
- ❌ Enable their behavior by shielding them from consequences.

Family FAQ
Common Questions
Can I call on behalf of my loved one?
Absolutely. We often take initial calls from family members. We’ll guide you through the next steps and help you understand how to support your loved one’s transition into sober living.
What if my loved one doesn't want help?
This is a common and difficult situation. While our residents must be willing to participate in recovery, we can offer resources and guidance on how to set healthy boundaries and have constructive conversations.
Can I visit my loved one at Taproot?
Yes, visitation is part of our commitment to family healing. We have scheduled days where family members can visit the community, meet with supportive peers, and see the environment first-hand.
Will you keep me updated on their progress?
With the resident's consent, we maintain open communication with families, providing regular updates on their milestones and general progress within our community program.
Is sober living the same as rehab?
No, sober living is the next step. While rehab focus on intensive clinical treatment, sober living provides a safe, drug-free environment to practice life skills and rebuild independence in a peer-supported community.
How much does it cost?
Costs vary based on the specific home and level of semi-private or private room availability. Please contact us directly for current transparent pricing and any applicable funding guidance.
